How We Roll

At Penny Lane Clothing Exchange we’re committed to keeping clothes out of landfill. We love seeing them reworn, relived and enjoyed anew. Our hand picked, sustainably sourced items come directly from the public and are resold for others to enjoy. Our prices vary depending on the label, style and condition of the piece.

Tips for selling

What you get

When you swap at Penny Lane, you’re choosing to receive store credit that’s valid for any item, any time. We pay 50% in credit of what we price your items to sell for in the store (minus GST). We give you a card that records your name and the amount you are eligible to spend.

When you sell your clothes to Penny Lane for cash, you receive payment on the spot. We pay 25% of what we price your items to sell for in the store (minus GST). You get paid in cash for a total less than $100, or by bank transfer for a total that exceeds $100.

Selling to Penny Lane Clothing Exchange

We buy the great stuff in your wardrobe that you don’t wear. We purchase gently loved designer and independent labels, contemporary, vintage and retro clothes, shoes, jewellery, handbags, belts and all other accessories. We look for on trend pieces that are special or unique (we don’t stock stretch-knit tees or singlets – you can get those anywhere). Unless it’s a standout item, we don’t take fast fashion labels including H+M, Zara, Top Shop, Forever 21, MNG, Bardot, Sportsgirl etc.

We only consider ONE bag of items at a time and please, no hangers or shoe boxes. You don’t need to make an appointment to sell to us, but we’re often quite busy on the weekends so prefer items to be brought in during the week (please come in half an hour before closing to allow time to review your pieces carefully). If we can’t get to your goods there and then, we take your number and contact you as soon as we’ve been able to look through them carefully. We do not take any responsibility for items left on our premises overnight.

Before coming in to sell to us we recommend calling ahead, particularly if you’re travelling a long way. Penny Lane is a small boutique and we’re often so well stocked we’re unable to take more items. At these times we are only able to purchase pieces for store credit (not cash). To avoid disappointment, give us a call and we’ll update you on our inventory levels.

We buy the best of the season we’re in (warm clothes in winter, lighter items in summer), current trends, designer labels, vintage and fun, one-off pieces.

You don’t buy dirty clothing. Nor do we. We only accept clothes that are clean, unstained and odour-free.

Your pieces must be in great shape. If they have missing buttons, fallen hems, holes or the zipper’s broken, we can’t take them.

We like to give your items our full attention, so please allow us to process your pieces without distraction. Feel free to shop around the store while your items are being reviewed to get an idea of our price point, stock and customer.

Please note: Due to stock levels, season and condition, we might not be able to take many (or any) of your garments. Please, please don’t take it personally if we decide not to take your items! We can only purchase pieces we think will sell.
